How to Overcome Fear of Failure

and Fear of Success

Fear of failure phobia is common amongst a lot of entrepreneurs, high achievers, and athletes. We often associate failure with other additional meanings, effects, and thoughts about ourselves. When we try to eliminate failure of the fear of it in our own strength the tendency is to stop trying. When you stop trying, you stop failing and therefore keep yourself away from experiencing the fear and perceived potential pain of the failure.  Obviously, this line of thinking is flawed because failure is simply part of life and part of a business. Without experiencing failures you can not experience success. One defeat today doesn’t mean defeat forever.

Overcome Fear of Failure

To overcome the fear of failure you have to re-work what you believe failure means about you/for you. There is more often than not a lie that we are believing that we don’t want to be true. Failing would make the lie true in our minds. So the mind is where you must re-work the truth of what failure is.

Here are 6 questions to journal about and take some time for self-reflection.

  1. What does failure mean about myself?

  2. What will others think of me if I fail?
  3. What lies am I believing here?
  4. What is the real truth?
  5. What does God think and the Bible say about me?
  6. What will I now choose to believe?

“If you knew you could not fail, what would you attempt?”

Overcome Fear of Success

For me, fear of success was associated with my view and definition of what success meant to me. For example, my Dad became very financially successful when I was a teenager and then had very little time for his four kids and wife. So for a long time, I associated success with having no time for my family. Since quality time with family is a deep value of mine I was unintentionally self-sabotaging my entrepreneurial efforts. See we unconsciously and naturally move towards things that will provide us benefit and we move away from things that cause us pain and fear; it’s nature.

Here are 6 questions to help you overcome the fear of success.

  1. What do I have to give up for success?
  2. What are the bad things that will happen if I am successful?
  3. Is that true? What are the lies I’m believing here?
  4. What does God say about me and about being successful?
  5. What becomes available in my life when I am successful?
  6. When I am successful what benefit will others around me experience?

There is no place in the marketplace or in the Kingdom of God for fear of failure or fear of success. You are gifted, talented, and called to the marketplace if you are one who regularly reads this blog. What you are called to do in business does not require fear and you should not let it into your life. We don’t have to fear because of who our God is.

The Bible specifically tells us that fear is not of God:

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. - 2 Timothy 1:7

The deeper your dependency on God the less you will experience fear in your life! Your trust grows which crowds out fear and you’ll know confidentially that in all circumstances God is for you and not against you and that you will be ok.
